Policy

  • A safety policy must be written if an organisation employs 5 or more people
  • A road safety policy can be added to the existing safety policy or written as a separate statement.
  • The policy should be supported by top management
  • The policy should set the safety direction and be backed by senior management commitment at the highest level.
  • The safety policy should be reviewed regularly.
  • The safety policy should be influenced by the results of risk assessments.

A road safety policy should cover the following topics:

  • Information gathering and dissemination
  • Provision of adequate resources
  • Consultation and ownership (safety culture)
  • Issuing of company guidance
  • Performance indicators
  • Information to third parties e.g. agencies and contractors
  • High standard of driving at all levels
  • Safe vehicles
  • Effective consultation
  • Effective training
  • Recording of the number and severity of incidents
