Driving for Work: Mythbusters
52 common misconceptions – and the facts employers and drivers need to know
Myth 15: ADAS systems will stop the driving crashing

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as advanced emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control, are valuable safety tools, but they have limitations that drivers frequently misunderstand through a lack of knowledge.
These systems are designed to support the driver, not replace them.
They can be defeated by poor weather or road markings, and may not function correctly if poorly maintained or incorrectly calibrated.
Drivers who over-rely on ADAS are more likely to disengage from the task of driving, increasing risk.
Employers must ensure drivers are properly trained in the capabilities and limitations of any ADAS fitted to their vehicles, and understand that the driver remains responsible at all times.
Driver takeaway:
ADAS systems are there to assist you, not to drive for you.
Understand exactly what each system in your vehicle does, when it activates, and crucially what it cannot do. Stay fully engaged at all times.
Manager takeaway:
Ensure every driver is properly trained on the ADAS features fitted to their vehicle before they use it.
Include ADAS capabilities and limitations in vehicle familiarisation programmes and update training when fleet vehicles change.
