Driving for Work: Mythbusters

52 common misconceptions – and the facts employers and drivers need to know

Myth 31: Roadside stops for vans are rare

DVSA enforcement activity targeting vans has increased significantly in recent years, reflecting growing recognition of the risk posed by non-compliant light commercial vehicle operations. Vans are stopped and inspected for a wide range of issues: overloading, insecure loads, tyre condition, driver documentation, and compliance with drivers’ hours.

The assumption that vans ‘fly under the radar’ compared to HGVs is increasingly outdated. Employers and drivers who operate on the basis that they are unlikely to be checked are taking a gamble that is becoming progressively less safe.

Vehicle inspectors also know exactly what they are looking for so have a very high success rate when stopping vehicles they suspect of being illegal. One such giveaway is a van with lots of litter or clutter on the dashboard as this often identifies a driver who really doesn’t care about the state of his vehicle, and is less likely to have done a pre-use safety check or bothered about the load being overweight.

Employers and drivers need to work together to ensure that the vehicle is safe and looks well cared for.

Driver takeaway:

Operate as though a roadside stop is possible on every journey – because it is.

Keep your documents in order, your load secure, your tyres legal, and your vehicle well-maintained and presentable.

Manager takeaway:

DVSA enforcement of vans has increased significantly. Do not assume your fleet flies under the radar.

Build a compliance culture where vehicles are maintained, checks are completed, and drivers know what an inspection involves, including how the vehicle looks.
