Driver Induction
We believe that one of the keys to reducing work-related road risk is to ensure that our people receive a full and thorough induction so that they understand our expectations of them and in turn what they can expect from us when it comes to keeping them safe on the road.
The Fleet Team works in conjunction with site teams and the Health, Safety & Environment Team to make sure that all drivers of company vehicles understand the Fleet Policy and Processes and their obligations.
Our line managers also receive training as part of our “Leading the GT Way” leadership course which ensure that they understand their role in managing the work-related road risk for their team members.
Licence Checking
Licence checks are completed for all employees driving on company business using the Key 2 Fleet Management system. The frequency of checks is determined by the individuals’ risk rating and varies from every three months to annually. Over 5,000 checks are completed annually.
Driver Handbook
The Galliford Try Driver Handbook is updated regularly and provides guidance for drivers on all driving related policies as well as what to do in the event of an incident or breakdown. It is available as a hard copy or digitally via the Group intranet.
Driver Risk Assessments
All employees who drive on company business are required to complete an online driver risk assessment with our partner Drivetech every three years.
This includes company car and van drivers, as well as employees in receipt of the carallowance, and those who use their own vehicles for company business on a regular basis.
The risk assessment enables Galliford Try and Drivetech to tailor a suitable training programme according to an individual driver’s needs.
On completion of the assessment, eLearning modules are made available with further 121 coaching sessions arranged for drivers who provide higher risk responses to their assessment.
Driver Training
At Galliford Try we believe that empowering our employees with the skills to improve road safety is important. We offer a selection of in vehicle and classroom-based courses via Drivetech. These courses range from a half-day coaching session designed to reduce the employee’s potential risk by giving insight into driver behaviour tendencies to keep them safer on the road, to full-day vehicle familiarisation courses for employees driving a commercial vehicle for the first time.
Further sessions are also offered to employees who may be driving on UK roads for the first time and Post Incident Coaching sessions are offered to all employees following any significant collision. This is regardless of whether they drive a company vehicle or their own. We also support the transition to EV vehicles by offering courses aimed at helping employees familiarise themselves with the differences between driving an EV vehicle when compared to a traditional ICE Vehicle.
Regular bulletins and safety tips are also published to all employees via the Fleet Departments Intranet pages.
Commercial vehicles
In vehicle coaching is mandatory for all employees who will be driving commercial vehicles and is completed within the first two months and refreshed every three years. The focus of these sessions varies depending on the skill level of the driver and offers guidance on eco driving techniques as well as road risk reduction.

Working Together
Reducing work-related road risk through collaboration
Road risk policies and strategies for risk reduction are discussed and designed across our Group involving input from all departments.
The Fleet Team and Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) teams work closely with Insurers and the Group’s Accident Management provider to identify trends and manage claims
All major incidents and others meeting certain criteria are identified at point of reporting are followed up and investigated by both HR and the HS&E teams.
Business Benefits
Continued improvement drives results
In 2024, the number of accidents dropped from an average 0.17 incidents per vehicle in 2023 to 0.13 incidents per vehicle.
This shows a 24% reduction in the number of incidents in the last year.
Group spend on end-of-life damage is also down in the year by £30k showing a 9% reduction in costs in 2024 from 2023.

Fleet Sustainability
Progress so far
In September 2021, we updated our Fleet Policy to include only EV and PHEV options on the choice list.
The fleet’s average Co2 emissions reduced to 40g/km at the end of 2022 and by the end of 2023 was reduced further to 29g/km.
By May 2024, the company car fleet reached 60% EV and 32% PHEV with average CO2 emissions down to 18.6g/km.
The transition to EV for commercial vehicles has been slower mainly due to a lack of availability of suitable vehicles.
