New Business Champion Announced
October was a busy month for the team as we announced our latest Business Champion, McLaren Automotive and, to celebrate this held a fantastic event at their production facility in Woking in partnership with the Institute of Directors.
One of the things that most impressed us about McLaren’s journey was the way Hannah Gregory, their Driver and Road Safety Manager, had engaged the workforce in developing their Driver Safety Policy. Instead of simply writing it herself and distributing it, she engaged staff from all areas of the business through a series of workshops to fully understand the risks in each area, and get feedback on how the proposed policy would work in practice.
The result was a policy that all the staff engaged with fully as soon as it was launched with great results for improved driving standards and reduced collisions.

Lincolnshire Road Safety Summit
I’d like to thank Marc Jones, the Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner for kindly inviting me to speak about Driving for Better business at this inaugural Road Safety Summit on 3rd November.
It was a really interesting event with other speakers invited from around the country to share their successes dealing with different road safety issues. It was refreshing to see the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership actively seeking out and sharing such demonstrations of good practice.
My talk followed the Rt Hon John Hayes MP, Minister for Transport, and was well received by the audience who were keen to see how Driving for Better Business could make a difference in their local area.
Collision Avoidance Technology Demonstrations
The latest vehicle safety technologies, also known as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have been proven to reduce road collisions and vehicle damage. Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) for example, can reduce ‘at fault’ rear collisions by up to 38%, and third-party injury claims by up to 45%.
Many fleets already starting to take up this technology but many more don’t due to a lack of understanding around what’s available, what benefits it might bring and what the cost implications are. Thatcham Research, Bosch and Driving for Better Business are therefore running live ADAS technology demonstration days on the 28th and 29th November so that fleet decision makers can experience this collision avoidance technology for themselves.
This is a high-level event, showcasing both car and van technology, including the latest systems available on VW Commercial Vehicles, following their recent announcement that AEB will be fitted as standard to all their new vans.

Driving for Better Business at Highways UK
Driving for Better Business is hosting a Breakfast Briefing at the Highways UK exhibition and conference (8th November at Birmingham NEC) to stress the importance of managing work-related road safety to all contractors working in the highways construction and maintenance sector.
I am chairing the session at 9am with contributions from Lucy Fell, Director of Health Safety and Wellbeing at Highways England, Colin Knight, Head of Fleet Safety and Compliance at the Clancy Group and Mark Cartwright, Head of Vans at the Freight Transport Association.
While many of these contractors are good at managing their HGV fleets, we want to ensure they are also managing their car, van and grey fleets to the same high standards.

Appy Fleet launch ‘Perfect 10 Challenge’
Appy Fleet is organising a competition during Brake’s Road Safety Week (20th-26th Nov), which is open to all organisations running cars and vans in the UK.
Drivers can monitor how smooth their driving is through Appy Fleet and the company will be donating £10 to road safety charities for every journey over 10 miles completed using Appy Fleet, and which scores a perfect 10.

New standard for motorcycle couriers
Transport for London (TfL) and the Mayor of London have launched a range of new measures to raise standards within the motorcycle delivery industry including a pioneering move to explore the expansion of the existing Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) to include those companies which use motorcycles in London.
