Driving for Work: Mythbusters

52 common misconceptions – and the facts employers and drivers need to know

Myth 7: Clean driving licence = safe driver

A clean licence shows that a driver has not been caught and convicted of a driving offence – it is not a measure of their driving standard or attitude to risk.

Some of the most dangerous drivers on the road have never received a penalty point. Conversely, a driver with points on their licence may have genuinely reflected and improved their behaviour.

Employers should look at the whole picture: licence checks are one tool, but driver assessments, telematics data, near-miss reports, and feedback from managers all provide a much richer and more accurate picture of driver risk.

For their part, drivers need to always abide by the Highway Code.

Always focus and avoid driving carelessly. Don’t speed or tailgate other drivers, don’t use a mobile phone while driving and never drive after taking drugs or alcohol.

Driver takeaway:

A clean licence reflects what you haven’t been caught doing – not how safely you drive. Commit to the Highway Code in full, not just when you think you’re being watched.

Manager takeaway:

Use licence checks as one layer of a wider risk picture. Combine them with driver assessments, telematics data, near-miss reports, and regular conversations.

The cleanest licence in your fleet may belong to your highest-risk driver.
