Managing employees who drive cars for work.
The Car Driver Toolkit is now available to fleet managers, and employers with employees who drive a car while at work. That includes not only your company cars and vehicles, but also cars that are owned by your employees, or leased by your business.
There are close to 15 million cars on UK roads being used for business journeys.
Regardless of whether they are company cars provided by employers, or ‘grey fleet’ where the vehicles are owned or leased by employees, the safety and legal requirements are the same.
Why managing road risk matters
It is estimated that around 200 incidents involving someone at work, cause injury or death on the road every week. Road incidents are the biggest cause of work-related accidental death.
The law is clear – an organisation has a legal duty of care to an employee at work, regardless of vehicle ownership, meaning grey fleet vehicles and drivers need to be managed as diligently as company-owned or leased vehicles and drivers.
Car Driver Toolkit – managers resources to share with drivers
Road safety is a shared responsibility. The National Highways Driving for Better Business Programme has produced a series of driver information cards with advice and best practice across a range of topics, to assist car drivers, and fleet operators, to do their part to help ensure the safe and legal use of company vehicles.
This Car Driver Toolkit will help to support the wellbeing of drivers, while promoting best practices. We have seen our Driving for Better Business community reap the benefits of managing road risk for those who use company vehicles or their own cars to drive while at work.
They demonstrate how it’s possible to reduce costs, improve operating conditions, and ensure that the vehicles remain safe, legal, and well-maintained, prioritising the wellbeing of drivers at all times.
